For this design competition, participants were asked to develop a concept for an Ulta Beauty store. We were invited to think about the store holistically, considering both store design and visual merchandising, while enhancing the in-store customer experience to exceed Gen Z expectations.

This Ulta Beauty Concept Store is a transformative retail experience designed to compete with e-commerce by offering a vibrant space where beauty meets adventure, exploration, and connection within a community-oriented environment. This innovative concept aligns with some of Ulta's core values of delivering wow experiences, improving always, winning together, and championing diversity. At the heart of the store is the Ulta Playscape, an engaging area that invites customers to discover beauty through playful, interactive experiences. The Beauty Studio provides customers with hands-on learning opportunities fostering a sense of collaboration and community. These features allow brands to effectively communicate their values and showcase their products within them. The Content Lounge recognizes the influence of social media in today’s shopping habits, providing a dedicated space for content creators and influencers to engage and share their experiences tapping into the viral trends that drive Gen Z purchases. Additionally, a separate elevated salon experience offers a holistic approach to beauty providing customers a chance to enjoy personalized treatments. A reimagined Fragrance Room indulges a sensory exploration in a relaxed environment. The store layout prioritizes the current customer journey of discovery, engagement, and inspiration, featuring visually striking displays that cater to Gen Z's impulse buying tendencies and create excitement around brands and products. The incorporation of AI solutions personalizes recommendations and streamlines the shopping experience for Ulta’s guests. These solutions can be seamlessly integrated into a single store or selectively implemented across various Ulta locations, favoring a customized approach that caters to the unique needs of each Ulta location. Ultimately, this Ulta Beauty Concept Store is more than a retail space; it embodies inclusivity and community engagement, ensuring that beauty is accessible to all. By blending innovative experiences with social media trends, this concept not only attracts the 69% of Gen Z who shop in brick-and-mortar stores weekly but also inspires lasting loyalty and connection with the Ulta brand.
