For this project, we were tasked with designing an elementary school for grades K through 3, using the plans of an existing building in downtown Baton Rouge, the Robert A. Bogan Fire Museum. We were given a defined list of program requirements, along with space for an additional program of our choice to engage students.

Elementary students frequently struggle to stay engaged in the classroom; a challenge that may arise from the absence of a captivating design that integrates elements of the natural world. Offering a nature-based learning experience while incorporating "third places" throughout the school has the potential to ignite creativity, foster kindness, and promote stewardship among students. By creating a school that showcases biophilic design paired with engaging in-school programs, the well-being of both students and faculty is optimized, thereby enhancing student engagement.
