Bateau Mouche Coffee Lounge
ID2750
For this project, we were tasked with designing a coffee shop in a pre-existing historic building in downtown Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Working with a defined list of program requirements, we also incorporated a “wildcard” space of our choice, tailored to support and welcome neurodivergent individuals.

Bateau Mouche Coffee Lounge is located on the ground floor of a 1920s building in downtown Baton Rouge on Lafayette Street. This coffee lounge provides a welcoming environment for people from all walks of life to relax and step away from the stresses of daily life. Students, neighboring business employees, and tourists alike can gather here to enjoy common spaces, mingling with friends or meeting other customers.
With a range of comfortable seating options, Bateau Mouche caters to those who need space for individual work, as well as groups looking for larger tables and booths to collaborate. Families are welcome, with a designated low-traffic area for children with autism.
Only steps away from the bank of the Mississippi River, the coffee lounge draws inspiration from its proximity to the river. The name “Bateau Mouche” refers to the French term for “riverboat,” paying homage to Louisiana’s French heritage and early 1900s river travel. The lounge’s design incorporates classic 1920s elements, touches of Southern charm, Louisiana history, and French influences, visible in the wainscoting, gold accents, gallery walls, and elegant materials throughout. The design highlights original building features like the brick exterior and layout, aiming to evoke the memories and experiences of life in the South, particularly Louisiana.
